The highlight of my day was Stacy’s defense. The lowlight was how some of the audience was acting during Stacy’s defense.
Sta-, I mean Dr. MacAllister did an excellent job and I and I am very happy for her. I only wish that others would refrain reading a newspaper, texting, emailing, editing an unrelated powerpoint, and watching the world cup during her defense. I was situated near the door and saw one person do all of these things. Afterwards I spoke my frustrations to someone else and they said “well all she needs is their signature so as long as they weren’t disruptive.” Others watched the world cup too, but in comparison I am less frustrated. They had the option of not showing up at all, but came to support their peer so I can at least give them that.
To me, these behaviors seem very rude and I certainly hope that it’s not standard practice. I’d hate to work several years towards a project only to lose my audience’s attention over a sports game that they can watch later.
End of rant.
We hope you’ll tune in next time,
