Luncheon Lectures Takeaways
We often have luncheon lectures during which we learn about the backgrounds of our guests. So far, we have had Eliot, Jack Miller and Jim Oliver who is the director of the student innovation center.
From each of them I learned a lot. Eliot who at one point during his undergraduate was figuring out what degree to choose- This is so much me right now . Not that I want to change what I study now, but I want to study something in addition. I find a lot of fields interesting and literally wants to learn all of them- Math Encryption, Neuroscience, cognitive sciences, sociology, philosophy (more the ethics side), Industrial engineering, and now psychoacoustics. I guess it’s kind of impossible to learn deeply that many subjects in a lifetime? Every day I discover a new discipline of interest. Then, we had Jack with a background in mechanical engineering who works in the medical field focusing on MR & VR for medical training . And yesterday we had Jim; I really like how he changed his choices and took risks (I don’t like risks). I also learned from him about the different types of funding available for graduate students, which was very enriching.
Thanks to them for sharing their experiences, in some ways it reassures me that I am not the only one undecided as an undergraduate on which path I will take. I realized that it is important to explore (not without objectives) and not just get stuck in one area.
