Meetings and ethics talk
Today has been a whirlwind. We started off with a talk by Stephen G about how to apply to grad school which was really interesting. I didn’t realize that the application process to undergrad was so different, and that it’s really the connections you make with certain professors that determine admittance over a perfect application. I also didn’t know there were different types of grad programs such as thesis programs v capstone programs. It made me think a lot about what would fit me best.
Directly after, Eliot came in to give another ethics talk following the readings we did on Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes. We discussed her journey to the downfall of Theranos and it was fascinating to think about how someone who was so young, as a woman in Silicon Valley against such odds grew to heights never thought possible. Also to consider the types of pressures that led her to eventually make the corrupt decisions she did. It makes you wonder what you would have done in her situation.
You know, when people ask me if I ever wanted to be famous, I always say that I’d only want to be famous for doing good in the world, not necessarily gain celebrity status because I really do believe that kind of status would change me as a person. I don’t know if I want to see the person I might become given that kind of power, which is definitely something Elizabeth fell victim to. I’m sure it can be easy to lose sight of your original altruistic hope.
