Stress a Little or Stress a Lot
A big thanA big thank you to Cody Fleming for coming and talking with us last week. He had a pretty interesting journey that led him to the research field, which resonated with me. After his talk, we had the opportunity to see an autonomously driving RC car that they were working on. The RC car was super cool, but what he said when we were talking about wrapping up the program was more interesting. He said not to stress about completing the projects, then he corrected himself and said to stress a little. Stress is a funny thing. Early humans used to get stressed in life-threatening situations, like having no food for the next day or when they were being hunted by a lion. Now we get stressed over things like emails, meetings, and finishing projects on time. I used to have really bad stress and anxiety that would paralyze me for the most basic tasks. I struggled with things as simple as buying a soda at the gas station or stressing about grades in school. Now I’m able to use my stress as motivation, but it’s taken a long time to get here. For me, it’s helpful to remind myself that the things I’m stressing about aren’t life-threatening situations. If I get a bad grade on a test, it’s okay, it’s not going to kill me. Too much stress can harm you both physically and mentally, but not enough stress, and you’re not invested in whatever you are working on. So, I believe you should stress a little, but not too much. Anyways, we have two weeks left, so I’m going to go stress a little…
This is a great insight! Stress is definitely a good motivator, and too much stress can be detrimental to a person. It is a fine balance, so definitely add in some time to rest and recharge during this last two weeks!
