HCI: Study Project

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 30, 2024 by Sophie MeronekJuly 1, 2024

For this assignment we are to design a study about smart phones and driving safety. I will be creating a study that will be quasi experiment. The study will be looking at phone usage and driving safety. The question is whether phone usage impacts the drivers’ chances of picking up their phones. I hypothesize that those with a higher phone usage will pick up their phones more while driving, compared to those who have lower phone usage. The experiment will have the participants fill out a survey about their phone usage throughout the day. In addition, we will take the average number of hours used on the phone during the past week to also determine whether they are heavy or … Continue reading →

HCI: Research Design Activity

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 29, 2024 by Ruby ThomasJune 29, 2024

The hypothetical study I designed related to smart phones and driving safety is testing the safety of GPS on the phone vs. GPS on the car console. Since the cellphone GPS has more built-in distractions than the car GPS, this study wants to evaluate how participants drive while using car or cellphone GPS. The hypothesis for this study is that participants using GPS on their phone will make more mistakes while driving than those who use the built-in car GPS. To test this, participants will be randomly assigned to either the phone or car GPS group. The participants will then try to navigate a certain route in a driving simulator using the GPS. The phone group will have notifications appear … Continue reading →

HCI assignment: Study on smartphones and driving safety

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 29, 2024 by Lydia LonzarichJune 29, 2024

Title: The effect of music familiarity on drivers attention. Most drivers listen to music in their car, often from a smartphone that is connected to the car via Bluetooth or a cable. My own observations suggest that when drivers listen to music that is unfamiliar, they tend to either look down at their phone or the central display in the car to skip or like the song. Both of these options divert the drivers’ attention away from the road. This study is intended to understand the relationship between the familiarity of music being played in the car and the drivers’ attention and behavior on the road.   Research question: How does the familiarity of the music playing in the car … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 28, 2024 by Lydia LonzarichJune 28, 2024

This morning I had a big whoops: I woke up at 10:43am. You know those mornings when you wake up and freak out that you have to be somewhere only to realize that it’s Saturday, and then you can breathe again…that’s how I felt, except worse because it wasn’t actually Saturday, and I was already almost 2 hours late to the lab. I made it to the lab by 11ish and had a chance to talk with everyone about the situation. Everyone was so kind about it, but I still felt so bad for the inconvenience I caused.  Aron came to talk with us for an hour at 11 to tie up some loose ends and answer any of our … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 28, 2024 by Lydia LonzarichJune 28, 2024

Yesterday morning we had HCI class with Stephen. He talked about the scientific methods involved in designing a study. This was an interesting lecture because he went really in-depth into the things to consider when designing a study, such as the different methods for measuring data and what their pros and cons are, and how to effectively evaluate the data you collect. He gave us a lot to think about, like how you could manipulate a study in order to measure and collect data differently. Our homework is to come up with an experiment that will test some relationship between iphones and driving, so stay tuned.  After class, Stephen stayed with us to talk during the lunch and lecture. The … Continue reading →

HCI – Smartphones and Driving Safety Study

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 28, 2024 by Harrison BrownJuly 2, 2024

My study would be about comparing how drivers pay attention to the road while using Apple CarPlay vs while using a phone mount in their car. I would use eye tracking to gauge where the driver is looking and the percent of time the driver spends while looking at the screen while in the car. Vs.

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 28, 2024 by Andrea TorresJune 28, 2024

This morning we worked more on the deeper dives. I am almost done perfecting the teleportation aspect of our game, which is exciting, because that means I can finally move on to the animal sounds and assets. Not much else has happened today. We finally had a little bit of a break last night on the STEM XR project, since the grad mentors told us to put a hold on our game idea development. It was nice to relax a little bit after working really hard to develop our ideas the past few weeks. We’re crossing our fingers so that the faculty end up choosing one of the topics we liked the most. Until next time 🙂

I was informed of some typos on my previous blog post which I will now return to and correct. This morning my group worked on the presentation for our Deeper Dive topic which we will be presenting next week. Today has been efficient.

0014: Cars & Phone experiment

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 27, 2024 by Alessandra WintersJune 28, 2024

Day 31. If I were to design a phone and driving experiment, I would test the GPS mapping functionalities. Stephen mentioned a school shooting and direction detection experiment here at Iowa State and I think something like that would be excellent for testing phones while driving. Question Does GPS type (audio vs visual vs combination) affect distracted driving level? Variables Independent: The type of GPS and the type of driving environment Dependent: The level of distracted driving Design We will have two lists of routes: a list of cities with high, but similar, traffic styles. we will also have a list of long distance routes with complex directions, long stretches of roads, and similar traffic and stops. We will select … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 27, 2024 by Andrea TorresJune 27, 2024

Today we had two talks from Stephen: the first one was about how to properly design an experiment and the issues that can easily arise that can end up swaying data before, during, and after conducting research. During his lunch lecture, he talked about some of the other projects he has worked on, such as developing a simulation to see whether visual or audible signage worked better for evacuating a school when there is a school shooter. I was surprised that the audible signage was better, but it was cool to learn more about how people’s brains work so that audible noises are easier to process. He also talked about the importance of taking advantage of opportunities and networking, as … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 27, 2024 by Ruby ThomasJuly 15, 2024

Last night was pretty fun because we went swimming like I thought we would, but only me and Rodney ended up going. After that, I just did work and went to bed. This morning was a lot of fun! We had a lecture with Stephen about research in HCI and after he was our luncheon lecture speaker! In the first lecture, he talked about research methods in HCI, which was very similar to the research methods I have learned for psychology. Afterwards, he told us about his personal history, current research projects, and his time in Namibia. It was really interesting hearing about how he got where he is today and he used such a good storyteller. The overall message … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 27, 2024 by Sophie MeronekJune 27, 2024

Hello friends So, it has been a few days since I last posted. I am currently trying to post on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (obviously I failed this week) to give me more ideas to write about. So, let’s break down the past few days. Tuesday Today we had Craft of Research on plagiarism. I didn’t realize how many different ways you could plagiarize. Most time I think it is taking exact phrases from test, but you must also give the authors reference for ideas. I mean I have done this while I write, but I never actively though about it. After that we had another Luncheon Lecture with Holly Oberbroeckling who was a previous REU intern. She gave a … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 26, 2024 by Ruby ThomasJuly 15, 2024

Last night was not too interesting- I just did some work and went to bed early so I could catch up on sleep. This morning, we started working with Alex on our MCA projects! I was able to print a few parts for my project and got to learn how to use different slicing programs. Angy and Rodney are making some progress on their projects as well, so that is really cool to see. So far one of the hardest parts about the 3D printing deeper dive is figuring out different prototypes and finding things to do while they are printing. So far, all of my parts have taken over an hour each, so I have filled the time with … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 26, 2024 by Lydia LonzarichJune 26, 2024

Today I’m writing from outside again. It’s not so humid out today and there’s a breeze, so it actually feels good to sit in the sun.  This morning we met in our deeper dive groups. We had to finish watching the last bit of a tutorial on how to connect the VR headset to Unity and establish basic controls. The hardest parts were getting locomotion, and setting up the trigger controls so that we can pick items up in the VR environment. The video failed us for the trigger control part though because we spent maybe an hour outside of the video trying to get it to work properly. Regardless, I’m enjoying the class and the problem solving aspect of … Continue reading →

Post Storm Lake

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 26, 2024 by Andrea TorresJune 26, 2024

Yesterday we went to Storm Lake. We met some of the students that we are designing the application for, and we met with one teacher. Our interview with the teacher was incredible: she was a high school science teacher, but she had worked in the middle school as well at Storm Lake, so she knew about how teaching methods changed between the two levels and had many opinions about how to best engage students in the classroom. She also told us about the pros and cons of integrative learning, so we have a better idea of what kind of teaching style we should use in our game. Working with the students was also really helpful. We learned about their previous … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 26, 2024 by Chukwuma MaduwubaJune 26, 2024

So for this I’m starting from yesterday. We had a luncheon lecture from a previous reunion which I actually like because she could actually relate to us to give us experiences she had here and also a few challenges which was very insightful. Today has been pretty tiring mainly because it was to hot and I couldn’t fall asleep the night before. I thought that would be the worst part of my day, and then we had to do our deeper dive topics and the YouTube video we used to guide us was trash, luckily due to hard work and discipline we pulled through and finished the first quarter of our project.

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 25, 2024 by Lydia LonzarichJune 25, 2024

This morning we had our last craft of research session with Yvonne. We pretty much just talked about the different forms of plagiarism and how to avoid them. I think the information I learned today will be very useful when it comes to writing the final research paper considering all the papers we’re planning to use and reference. After that class, Holly Oberbroeckling spoke with us for the lunch and lecture. I really enjoyed listening to her because she was in our position 10 years ago as an intern here at ISU, so she had a unique and relatable perspective. She began by talking through the actual slides that she and her teammates used for their final presentation. This was … Continue reading →

Today we had Craft of Research, and we learned about plagiarism and how to avoid it. I had always wondered about how to cite a citation that another paper had used, so it was nice to learn how to do that properly. We had our lunch and learn with a previous REU student. She walked us through the presentation she gave when she was in the program, explained her journey of how she got to the career she is in today, and gave us some insight on what to expect and how to deal with failure in these next few weeks. It was nice to hear from someone who has experienced essentially the exact same things we have and to … Continue reading →

At home, I talked with my friends from home for a while and then we watched yet another episode of GoT. This morning, we had a Craft of Research session about blogging and plagiarism. Yvonne talked about how it is important for us to blog everyday for a number of reasons and gave us tips on blogging. Then yesterday, we began on our deeper dive MCAs and I did my first 3D print in ~10 years (I didn’t model it SAJ). Im trying to test a bunch of different mechanics with 3D printing like joints, chain links, mechanical compliance, and magnets to hopefully make something really cool. Hi hi Today we spent a couple hours working in our deeper dive groups. Andrea, Chu-Chu and I were able to narrow down our focus for our project so it’s more feasible to complete in just a little over a week. We also spent a little bit playing some games with the VR headsets. I played one that had such cool and realistic graphics. The game also helped me see what kinds of features we can implement in our own project in terms of locomotion and user-controlled interaction. On Saturday we all went thrifting for a few hours after breakfast, and then spent a few hours at a mini outdoor waterpark near campus. That night some of us went out … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 24, 2024 by Sophie MeronekJune 24, 2024

Hello friends I swear I am alive, just went MIA from blogs. At least y’all aren’t asking for a proof of life (my mom has done that twice). Last Thursday for out extracurricular we watch Spirited Away. This is an anime movie about a young girl that gets swept into the spirit world and must work to save her parents. I won’t go too far into the plot, so I don’t spoil it. I have seen this movie before, so there weren’t any big surprises. The next day we were starting our deep dives. My deep dive is about machine learning. The plan is to create a model that will be able to drive a self-driving car. I haven’t done … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 24, 2024 by Andrea TorresJune 24, 2024

I cannot believe we are halfway through this program! It’s going by so fast. Today we did some more work on our deeper dives. We established our problem statement and are going to begin working on designing the application in Unity this afternoon. Coming up with a problem statement has been a bit difficult, since we originally just came up with the idea for fun, but an app can’t be created just because it seems fun. Right now we’re saying that our hiking simulator will allow for participants to be educated on what kinds of plants and animals the participants could expect to encounter while hiking, since the studies we have read don’t mention making a game to get participants … Continue reading →

On Thursday, we had a movie night and watched Spirited Away. I feel like I belong here now that I’ve watched a studio Ghibli movie. It was pretty good though, I liked it.  Dr. S came in to chat with us yesterday. Her area of research is so different from what we do in the VRAC, but it was still really cool to hear about the impact that her research has on individuals with Parkinson’s disease. There has also been a trend in the speakers that come to talk – most of them don’t end up where they thought they would when they were undergrads. To me, that thought is somewhat intimidating but also exciting at the same time  Yesterday … Continue reading →

We taught them how to use Sphero Bots, and all the teams were very engaged throughout the entire time, despite being younger students. My group was super excited to try switching up the bot’s speed and time that it was running to see what would happen, and other groups made really cool obstacle courses for their bots. Overall, it was a very fun and productive day. (And we went and got smoothies after :)) Today has … Continue reading →

I think most of us really enjoyed it and we are talking about also watching Howl’s Moving Castle sometime soon. Today, we had our first Deeper Dive session. I really enjoyed getting to learn more about 3D printing and additive manufacturing as a whole. SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 20, 2024 by Sophie MeronekJune 20, 2024

Hello peeps Today was a jam packed day. We had Dr.S give a luncheon lecture on her research and how she got to where she is now. Her research focuses on music and Parkinson’s disease. She works with people who have Parkinson’s and uses singing to try and lessen some of the effects. I was extremely interested on how she was using the research to help people and how connected she was with her subjects. Following that, it was Harrison’s turn to be mind controlled. JK! Today we had our last class spent working with Unity. I actually really enjoyed working with Blender and Unity with Kate and Anjali this week because of the creative freedom that we had to explore the platforms, and to learn about what you can do on each of them. It’s crazy to think about how much I’ve already learned here. Before this week, the process of designing, creating, and navigating a 3D virtual environment was so foreign to me.  After lunch, we had some blog/work time, and then all sat and listened to Alex, Adam, and Kate pitch the deeper dive topics that they’ll be teaching over the next two weeks. For while Tom Petty is claimed to have once said, “You have four years to be irresponsible here. Relax. Work is for people with jobs. You’ll never remember class time, but you’ll remember time you wasted hanging out with your friends. So stay out late. Go out on a Tuesday with your friends when you have a paper due Wednesday. Spend money you don’t have. Drink ’til sunrise. The work never ends, but college does” you must question the wisdom of his ways. For Epistemologists’ … Continue reading →

Unity, EEG, and Zumba

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 18, 2024 by Sophie MeronekJune 18, 2024

Hello all Yesterday we started to work in Unity. We were just moving the 3D models we made in Blender to Unity. Soon we will create animations. Today for our lecture we had Dr Eliot Winer, who is the director of VRAC and for the REU. He talked about his journey to where he is now and some of the research he has done. It was kind of nice to point out that our future isn’t a straight path. We might end up in industries we couldn’t fathom now. In addition, we had an another day with the EEG today. We have been working with the EEG to prepare for the real trials with our PsychoPy trivia questions. I have … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 18, 2024 by Lydia LonzarichJune 18, 2024

Today we started our day with another craft of research session with Yvonne. She walked us through the discussion section and how to present our results.  Then, Harrison and I worked on getting the trivia question system running on the builder component in Psychopy. A bit ago, Sophie was able to fix some of the issues we were having in the coder component, but Harrision and I wanted to get it running in a layout that was more readable for Aron and others who aren’t as familiar with Python code. Today was a semi-success though because we were finally able to get it running all the way through, but we still have some things to fix.  At 11, Eliot came … Continue reading →

Harrison – Day 16

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 18, 2024 by Harrison BrownJune 18, 2024

First off, I cannot believe it has already been 16 days of this wonderful program. I have been enjoying most of my time here (other than the brief periods of weekend homework) and the people have been wonderful. It was just a bit surprising typing that we were on day 16 when it does not feel like 16 days have passed even though I feel like I know the other interns well.

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 18, 2024 by Ruby ThomasJune 21, 2024

Last night was pretty uneventful- I just stayed home and worked on homework. I read an interesting article about how we must consider all of the meanings, life circumstances, and experiences of users when designing technology. I also got to see some of the data that the CommHEAT team collected last year and took some notes on that as well. Today, we had another craft of research lecture where we talked about the methods, results, and discussion sections of research papers. I really liked the article Yvonne used as an example. It talked about how certain balances of warmth and competency in AI teammates affected the reception of the AI in human teams. This reminded me of the warmth-competency matrix … Continue reading →

Day 2 Week 4

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 18, 2024 by Andrea TorresJune 18, 2024

Today we had our last Craft of Research meeting, and we learned about how to create the Methods, Results, and Discussion sections in a research paper. We also learned a little bit about what Yvonne is studying, which has to do with how people respond to AI depending on the AI’s perceived warmth and competence. It was very intriguing to see how different physical and non-physical characteristics of the robot examples she showed us changed people’s perceptions of the robots. We also had our lunch lecture with Elliot today. We learned about how he ended up working at VRAC, and how his path was in no way linear and continues to be varied; he doesn’t just work on the exact … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 17, 2024 by Lydia LonzarichJune 17, 2024

Hey again, today we started working with Unity. We pretty much learned how to use the platform by importing the scenes we made in Blender last week, and playing around with textures and lighting. We also connected Unity to Virtual Studios so that we could use C# code to control how we moved in Unity. For example, one of our tasks was to find a way to move forwards, backwards, left, right, and turn (by rotation) using the W, A, S, D keys on the keyboard. I was able to get the basics working, but I still have some adjusting that I want to do because I don’t want to be able to go down under my scene when I … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 17, 2024 by Ruby ThomasJune 17, 2024

This weekend, we went to the farmer’s market in downtown Ames! It was raining the whole time, but we still had lots of fun. I got two loaves of bread, a cupcake, and a book from the local bookstore. I enjoyed getting to talk to the people and get some good food. That night, Harrison, Lydia, and I laid in the grass and looked at the stars. I made more banana bread last night and had some for breakfast this morning. Today, we started putting our Blender models into Unity. It’s cool to get to see our models at all angles and I’m curious what we’ll do later today. Tonight I think we will watch more Game of Thrones and … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 17, 2024 by Andrea TorresJune 17, 2024

We started learning Unity today, and it’s a little bit easier than Blender. Either that or I’ve just gotten used to the trials and tribulations of modeling. I learned how to use the bloom function to add a glow to objects, but this afternoon I’m going to work on adding lighting, since I’m working on creating an in-ground pool. Side note: The Mongolian beef at the cafeteria was really good 😊 Until next time!

HCI: Questionable Interfaces

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 17, 2024 by Sophie MeronekJune 17, 2024

I am a big fan of wireless earbuds because they allow me to listen to music without having to have my phone on me at all times. With that being said, I do have some grievances with their design. I currently use JLAB Go Air Pop to listen to music. They do a great job for budget earbuds with music quality and connectivity, however, some of the touch functionalities are not the best. In order to change different settings such as volume, listening quality, and songs, you need to use the side of the earbuds. Each setting has a different tap pattern. My problem is if I accidentally bump the side of an earbud, it might pause the song or … Continue reading →

HCI: Bad Design

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 16, 2024 by Angelica Brito DiazJune 16, 2024

1: Slack new update I use this interface at my college to communicate in my classes and clubs. As an user of this website the choice to organize all of the channels by name rather than by the group they belong to makes it really difficult to search for them. While some have specific names, they all have a general and random channels. In the general channels is where I have found most of our communications happen. While it is not difficult to identify in which channel the message was sent since it is highlighted, writing a message is so tedious. When I try to find what I am looking for, the font and color that indicate which group the … Continue reading →

HCI: Interfaces to Improve

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 16, 2024 by Ruby ThomasJune 16, 2024

Here are two interfaces that I believe need to be improved upon. 1) Hulu My List: One feature that Hulu offers is the “My List” feature. This lets the user add content to the list so that they can come back and watch the show/movie without having to rely on memory. I think that this page is well designed visually; I like the rounded shapes and hierarchy created with different fonts, weights, and brightness. I also like how the preview image for the show is highlighted when you hover over it. The part that I believe needs to be improved upon is the more info link. In other streaming services, they have a clear button to let you know how … Continue reading →

HCI Assignment: Frustrating Interfaces

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 15, 2024 by Lydia LonzarichJune 15, 2024

Our task for our HCI course with Adam is to brainstorm two interfaces that are frustrating for the user. This took me some time to think of things because so many of the niche problems I thought of already have solutions to – like how they now make inserts that sit on top of car cup holders to hold water bottles that normally are too wide to fit, and they have wristlets that you can wear while you wash your face to avoid water from dripping down your arms and onto your sleeves. I was able to come up with a few though.  My first idea is bathroom stalls…why is it so common for public bathrooms to have such big … Continue reading →

HCI – What Netflix and Nintendo have done wrong.

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 15, 2024 by Harrison BrownJune 15, 2024

There are many products in the world that we enjoy using and some that we may have a distaste for. Below are two products that fit somewhere in the middle for me. I enjoy using these products, yet they have a major room for improvement in their user interface department. Netflix is a wonderful streaming service yet there is one noticeable flaw on its platform. This flaw is the autoplay feature. If you are browsing for a new show, it is better to skim over the short description to gauge interest. Instead, Netflix’s idea was to have a trailer play along with the description whenever the user hovers the mouse over a title for more than a fraction of a … Continue reading →

HCI– late night contemplations of bad UI

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 15, 2024 by Alessandra WintersJune 15, 2024

There have been several bad UI’s that I have encountered. But the worse two are as follows: -NASA’S website -Delt Airline’s Phone Application The thing that is awful about the NASA website is that there are layers upon layers upon layers of nested menus which seem to have no end. You get to one page of the site then immediately are presented with a another set of buttons which bring you to even more pages which are sometimes circular. One example is when you scroll to the Contact NASA button and select it. You are then presented with a very odd customer service page, as in, there is no real customer support. Instead it fulfills the duty of an FAQ … Continue reading →

Difficult Interfaces Blog

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 14, 2024 by Andrea TorresJune 14, 2024

We were asked to identify two types of interfaces (such as a physical object or computer software/website) that are difficult to use. My first idea was a nail clipper, since sometimes it’s difficult to get a precise cut or squeeze the clippers when you’re using your non-dominant hand. Behold, the electric nail clipper. It is formed the exact same way, but it is electronic, so all you need to do is position the clipper where you want it and press a button to cut your nails. The second interface that is difficult to use are computer mice. Sometimes when moving your cursor, you have to lift up the mouse in order to continue. *Fanfare* an extra button! All you will … Continue reading →

There was one round of Telestrations where I got the word flipper and by the end of it we had the words foot brain surgery, which is something. Following that, on a way back to the apartment, we saw Chu Chu on the side of the road looking at a storm drain. We thought he had some bike complications, so we got off the bus and went over to help. Turns out he dropped his phone into the storm drain. This lead to us calling public safety to try and get the phone out. After some … Continue reading →

I was able to get the grass, basket, and bushes done. The strawberry is a work in progress, but it’s getting there. I’ve been able to find a lot of tutorials on YouTube, and Angelie and Heela have been really great at helping. So far, I’m honestly really enjoying blender – more so than SolidWorks. To me, it’s more fun to use because I feel like I have more creative freedom.  After lunch we’ll get another 2 hours to work on our projects.  Oh … Continue reading →

After lunch, we’ll go back to the EEG lab with Aron to run another experiment using the trivia question system. Then we had blender introduction which was not as easy as she said it would be, nevertheless we pulled through, honestly I think blender is more interesting and easier to grasp than solid works. Today we basically just did HCI which is intro to history and conference which was a lot more interesting than I expected to be and it was kind of cool to know people who attend theses conferences.

3D Modeling is Fun

Howdy Y’all This week we have been doing a lot of 3D modeling. We started with Solidworks and Blender. I have really enjoyed Solidworks. We created 9 different parts and then assembled them, which is kind of tedious and kind of fun. Blender is interesting and is a little more complicated for me, but I am figuring it out. For example, we were supposed to make a cat for an activity, and instead I made a bat. Hopefully the cozy library I am planning on making will turn out better. Best, Sophie

Last night, we went to the pool and hung out with one of the interns from another REU, Ezra. We had lots of fun playing basketball and swimming around in the whirlpool and getting to know each other. Today, we had another Craft of Research lesson where we talked about literature reviews. I really liked the template Yvonne gave us. I think it will be really helpful when we have to start writing. After, we got to learn about Dr. Jon Kelly’s research and have lunch with him. I really really enjoyed his talk because he was talking about how he uses cognitive and sensory psychology in VR research applications. Today, he talked a lot about Cyber Sickness, which is … Continue reading →

Day 13 (or 15, depending on how we’re counting)

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 11, 2024 by Andrea TorresJune 11, 2024

Yesterday we learned SolidWorks, and after starting the day learning how to use it, we finished designing products while only using drawings as references. Today we continued learning about the research process, and learned about how to write a research paper. While in class we learned about IMRD (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion), ResearchRabbit, which is an awesome research resource that finds relevant articles with only a few keywords. We also had a cool talk during lunch where we learned about a research project developed to study cybersickness, why it occurs, and how to prevent it or reduce it. Overall, it’s been a good day so far :). Until next time!

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 11, 2024 by Lydia LonzarichJune 11, 2024

Hi, I forgot to post my blog on Friday, so just ignore the fact that it’s actually Tuesday. Yesterday we had our final C++ classes. Nick was a really great teacher this week. Although I had already known most of the concepts that came up, I still took some things away from his explanations.  The art market on Thursday was fun. We spent about 2 hours walking around main street, perusing the shops, and ended up finding a local ice cream shop that served pineapple ice cream. 10/10. By the time the market was over, we were all hungry, so we decided to go to Buffalo Wild Wings for dinner. It was fun until some people completely attacked me for … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 10, 2024 by Ruby ThomasJune 10, 2024

This weekend, we got up early on Saturday to do some physical bonding exercises and do a high ropes course. These activities were very intense. We had to pick each other up, Lydia stood on Harrison and Chu Chu’s shoulders, and lots of people got at least a little sore or injured… Sunday morning, I made French toast for everyone that was home! I made banana bread the day before so I used that and some chocolate chip brioche I had in the pantry. That evening, there was a picnic where we got to meet lots of other REU interns and got some good BBQ! Today, we started learning Solidworks. I don’t think it is that bad, but the homework … Continue reading →

Lobsters, Wings, and Ropes

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 10, 2024 by Sophie MeronekJune 10, 2024

Hello people, So, I realized I never posted my blog for Friday, so this one will be a longer post to cover the past 4 days. Thursday I said I would tell you more about the art walk and that is what this blog post is all about. So, the Art Walk was on Main Street and there were other shops with the art booths. At one of the shops, I was infatuated with a plush lobster that could also be used as a heating pad. I don’t know why, but the lobster made me so happy, and I ended up buying him. Meet Señor Lobster. We also explored a few other stores. There was a chocolate store that had … Continue reading →

It is now day 11 here in Ames. The scenery is very much still the same but the weather has dried and the temperature risen. I have risen above the ground upon the face of a boulder and spent many an hour running through hills in search of the legendary Minecraft Dark Oak. Walmart Shopping List: We meandered along the main streets of Ames to view the arts of the city. We consumed subpar food at the local cafeteria– the only food place we can find open that accepts our meal swipes so far. Photos were taken, roofs were not walked upon. A Journey to the Center of the Earth was began. Goods were ordered from the mystical Amazon and … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 7, 2024 by Andrea TorresJune 7, 2024

We went to an art festival yesterday, and I found a Spanish fan, a Spanish board game, and British custard! After the festival we went to Buffalo Wild Wings. Today we learned our last lesson of C++ and ate lunch with Nick, our programming teacher. Tomorrow we’re going to a ropes course, which I’m excited about since I haven’t been to a ropes course in a while.

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 7, 2024 by Ruby ThomasJune 7, 2024

Last night, we went to downtown Ames as a group for the first time this summer. There was an art walk, where lots of the shops were open later and artists had booths along the sidewalks. While I didn’t find anything from the artists, they were very talented. There are a lot of really cute shops in downtown Ames, but they all close around 6 pm or earlier. I hope that we will go back there possibly sometime on the weekend so we have more time to look around. After visiting Ames, we went out to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings. I had a really good wrap and it was lots of fun getting to hang out longer. Today is … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 7, 2024 by Lydia LonzarichJune 7, 2024

Today we spent our morning taking group pictures in our matching Iowa State shirts around campus. Then we sat down with Wesley Lefforts, a cardiovascular exercise physiologist, who spoke with us about his research. He was so fun to listen to. What I found really interesting was his discussion about menopause as it relates to his research on brain health. Put simply, the estrogen that women produce acts as a type of protection for the arteries. When women stop producing estrogen, they lose that barrier, which can then accelerate damage to the brain. This is a contributing factor to why women are about twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s as men.  Wes also gave us some valuable life advice. The … Continue reading →

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 6, 2024 by Andrea TorresJune 6, 2024

Last evening the STEM XR team went out for boba and met Anjali’s dog. Her dog was adorable and the boba was delicious!! Then Alee and I went rock climbing, which shredded my hands and made us feel like blobs afterward, but we’re going back again on Friday. Today we took our group photo (which basically turned into a 2-hour-long photo shoot), had a really awesome lunch n learn with Wes Leffers where we learned about the stiffness of the aorta and how it affects blood flow to the brain. We also heard about his hiking stories in Nepal, and were all gobsmacked when he said he wasn’t from New Zealand after presenting the whole time in a New Zealander … Continue reading →

Last night was a lot of fun because Harrison, Lydia, Rodney, Chu Chu and I went swimming in the state gym pool for the first time this summer! We played in the whirlpool, watched Harrison jump of the high dive a few times, played lots of water basketball, and relaxed in the hot tub a little bit. It’s been a long time since I’ve been swimming so I had lots of fun and am excited for the next time we go. This morning, we went around campus with Paul to take pictures for the website. We all got matching shirts with the vintage mascot to wear for the photo shoot. After we got back, we had our next lunch & … Continue reading →

More Papers and More Lectures

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 6, 2024 by Sophie MeronekJune 7, 2024

Hello, After yesterday’s post, we talked about a more optimal way to read different articles and papers. My biggest problem is I overly focus on minuscule details. This leads me to believing every small detail is important and I must write it down. This is ineffective because it would lead me missing the larger details and not seeing the full picture. Though thanks to Yvonne, I can read papers more efficiently. Today, we also had our second luncheon lecture. This was Dr. Wes Lefferts who focuses on physiology and does research in the Clinical Vascular Research Lab. Some of the topics he spoke about were completely outside of my knowledge but was still interesting. During the presentation, I thoughts about … Continue reading →

Papers and Rainbows?

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 5, 2024 by Sophie MeronekJune 5, 2024

Hello friends, Is it possible to drown in papers… Well not literally drowning, but it does feel like it right now. I am someone who loves to read books, but academic papers are a different concept all together. The research papers aren’t boring, but they are full of advance terminology and concepts that delve deep into the concept. Recently I was reading a paper about curiosity, and it explored the different definitions and theories that involved curiosity. In addition, I have been utilizing the recreational center here at Ames. Today post-workout, there was some rain while I was riding back to the apartments. Once the rain stopped, there was a magnificent rainbow and right above it was a second one. … Continue reading →

Today we started the day with more C++ coding. Then we had an hour break between class and lunch, so I finished my craft of research assignment for next Tuesday and then played some fire boy and water girl with Harrison on the computers. Harrison definitely could use some improvement. Because yikes. The dining hall had grapes again finally, so I got my grape fix in today at lunch. They were crunchy. We also decided to check out the Beyer pool after lunch because it’s only open from 12-2 M-F, so that was good to see inside. It has been 9 days. The logic trees have grown and code born from its brain thoughts. The elaborate colors on the black page show the efforts of the mind. We converse upon the wonderous question on how to help rural communities with their STEM education. The hopes of the many to persuade the few to pursue the curriculum in places of higher learning. But the question remains– how. The Freddy’s of the burger world holds a warm place in my heart, a reminder of home with its fry sauce and steak-based patties. Shoe string fries coated in the seasoning of the burger pantheon. Oh how I miss the wonderous food from my home afar.

Today was a little more difficult because the programs are getting more complex, but I was still able to figure out the challenges after a bit of work. We started using functions, so the programs are getting much longer. After work, we are going to try to go swimming, but we will have to see if the pool is open today. C++ and Luncheon Lectures

SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 5, 2024 by Sophie MeronekJune 5, 2024

Hello again, There have not been too many exciting events in the past 24 hours. We learned more C++ yesterday and focused primarily on condition and loops. The code for loops and conditionals is not too difficult for there are many similarities with Java. I am doing a side task with trying to code the number guessing game Bulls and Cows using C++. The goal of the game is to guess a 4-digit number and you only get clues on the number of digits that are in the correct place and if there are digits that are in the number, but not in the correct place. This is a fun task I try and do so I can apply different … Continue reading →

Today we attended a lecture with Dr. James Oliver who shared the ups and downs of his career, as well as some advice for grad school and future endeavors in industry or research. He encouraged us to be confident and proactive in social settings, revealed the power in fostering connections with people we meet, and so much more. For me, his story helped bring light to the fact that we’re all on our own journey, and it’s never too late to try new things or explore different directions in order to find what makes you happy.  Later today, we’ll meet with Aron, the graduate mentor for the Curiosity EEG team, to chat about the articles he gave us, and to … Continue reading →

It makes me more secure that I can tackle all the really complex parts of my projects. Also, we began to read papers on our topics for homework. The options are to wait for a potentially non-existent bus or walk through the thick warm forests to the cool center of survival (VRAC). The days grow longer and sleep scarce – this definitely has nothing to do with video games. Hi blog! First week in Iowa has been so much fun. This week was pretty chill in terms of workload, which gave us more time to get adjusted to the campus and the people. Going into this experience, I didn’t want to put any expectations on how well I would get along with the other interns because we all come from such different backgrounds, but I will say that I wasn’t expecting to find myself in a group of such amazing people who all get along so well so fast. Hello all, This is my first blog post here at ISU. These past 2 weeks have been very hectic for me. Earlier, I was scrambling to find a summer job and was completely lost on what my plans were. Then, I get a call from an Ames number, some things fell into place, and now I am here. This past weekend was extremely fun. We went to Des Moines for brunch and an escape room. The escape room took place in this game room set and we had to find three keys to escape. I won’t go into further detail, so I don’t spoil the surprise, but long story short, we escaped. SPIRE-EIT 2024 Posted on June 3, 2024 by Andrea TorresJune 3, 2024

After arriving to Iowa, a short, quick week of activities began. We learned the premise of each research project and received a more in depth description of our own projects. I’m really excited to begin working with the students at Storm Lake and learning more about what STEM careers might be most interesting to them. I’m also eager to begin working on developing a VR app for the project since I’ve never worked with Unity before and had never thought about creating a virtual application before. Aside from the projects, we went to an escape room on Saturday, which we managed to escape with technically only one real clue, and we also had our own pizza party.
